On Being Bald

One thing I have noticed since I no longer have a head of white hair, is that people do not have a way to judge my age. Ageism is very much alive today and the grayer or whiter your hair the more it is practiced. If you have dyed your hair and then let it grow out, then you will have experienced the subtle but significant effect of being dismissed as an old lady who knows nothing.

While it is winter and I do need hats more so for going outside, I am usually too warm inside to keep wearing the hat. I am fine with being bald. I get looks but most people seem to think that it’s just doing chemo that is causing it. I mostly receive complements on my head shape - not something any of us has control over!

What we do have control over is how comfortable we are in our own skins. I cannot control what others think, and in most cases they aren’t thinking much about anything anyway! I can control what I think about myself and how I carry myself. Being confident and comfortable are massive wins for all of us. Each of us is responsible for how we think about ourselves. Keep it positive, no self loathing and enjoy your life as it’s all you got!

Remember to just be yourself. Don’t caught up in being the person you think your family or friends think you are. They aren’t thinking about you and what you think others are thinking is most likely not important. Just be you. Relax in your self and enjoy who you are.
